Acupuncture A tried and tested system of Chinese Medicine, which is over 2,000 years old, acupuncture restores and promotes good health and wellbeing by inserting fine needles into the channels of energy. An acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help to restore its natural balance. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as qi (chi)- moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin. The flow of qi can be disturbed by many factors, including physical, mental and emotional: anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief. Other things such as poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma can also affect the qi. Many disorders can be helped from having a course of treatments, among which include menstrual and menopausal, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression and insomnia; helping to stop smoking, warts and a whole host of other conditions. Acupuncture and Pregnancy Feedback from midwives suggests that prebirth acupuncture can reduce the time spent in labour and reduce the need for medical interventions such as inductions and caesarean sections. Acupuncture can be used safely throughout pregnancy to help nausea, leg cramps, sciatica, back ache, turning a breech baby and inducing labour. Receiving a weekly acupuncture session from week 37 is advised to help prepare the body for birth, particularly the cervix and pelvis. Other conditions, such as pregnancy-induced-hypertension, heartburn and anxiety can also be helped. Where a baby is in the breach position the ideal time to treat is 34 weeks or before. After this the size of baby makes turning more difficult. However, even as late as 38 or 39 weeks some of these babies will turn. One treatment is required using a herb to warm acupuncture points (placed over the points but does not touch the skin) and then self-treatment is continued at home for up to 10 days. Midwives have commented that in their experience, natural birthing of breach babies is more prevalent with women who have been able to have acupuncture and self-treatment for at least five days before the procedure. For babies presenting posteriorly, either left or right occipital posterior, one treatment using the special herb is required, with self-treatment during labour (using acupressure and press tacks) where necessary. These simple treatments during labour are non-invasive and have been surprisingly effective in helping women who are experiencing failure to progress and back pain (typical of a malposition) to move into to an efficient labour as the baby turns from a posterior position to an anterior one. Midwives report that if the treatment is successful, the nature of labour changes positively within 10 to 15 minutes. Reflexology Reflexology is a holistic therapy that promotes well-being and relaxation through gentle pressure on the feet and/or the hands. It it helps to rebalance 'energy' in the body and stimulate natural healing processes. All parts of the body are said to be 'reflected' in the feet and hands and stimulating these relevant areas influences their corresponding organs and systems. For example, the big toe 'represents' the head and neck. Working in this area can relieve migraine or headache. Crystalline deposits of waste products such as calcium and uric acid accumulate around nerve endings on the foot and feel 'crunchy'. A swelling or just a strange sensation could indicate a possible problem in the related zone. Working on a point helps crush the crystals and stimulate circulation so that the lymph system can more easily eliminate them. Practitioners begin by examining the general appearance of your feet, noting their shape and condition. A dusting of talcum powder helps them use their thumbs and knuckles on the reflex points in a combination of massage, pressure and pinching, noting areas of pain or tenderness that call for extra attention. A number of weekly treatments may be required. Most people find it relaxing, but occasionally symptoms may worsen before improving, which is said to be a sign that the body's natural healing processes are removing 'toxins'. The benefits of reflexology have been shown to be effective for nearly all health problems, such as back pain, migraine, arthritis, infertility, digestive disorders, sport injuries, sleep disorders, and hormonal imbalances and stress-related conditions

Hypnotherapy
Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) deals with understanding how people can experience exactly the same event, yet interpret it differently, react to it differently, and remember it differently. each individual makes sense of the world around them by different strategies. If the strategies used to interpret the world are not working favourably, then NLP allows us to alter some or all of the strategy in order to produce a more positive outcome. Through suggestion during hypnosis, NLP can help the client to make changes faster and more permanent. In childbirth for example, Hypnosis is the only known no-risk pain reliever, making it safer for both mother and baby, and it has also been shown to reduce instances of post-natal depression. As a guideline, four sessions are recommended to be taken at any time during the pregnancy, which help prepare them on both a conscious and sub-conscious level for the whole birth process. Some people prefer to have them earlier on in pregnancy so that they can have more time to practice the techniques learnt. Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions. Some of these include: stress or anxiety; panic attacks; confidence issues; smoking cessation; phobias; weight loss; eating disorders; stuttering or stammering; sports performance; and habits or compulsions. Sessions are tailored for each individual client’s needs. Changes often occur more quickly than other traditional forms of therapy, with the average person needing only 3-4 sessions. Smoking cessation and phobias require only one session. |

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Craniosacral biodynamics is an approach to healing that acknowledges the deepest foundations of intrinsic wellbeing. This gentle but powerful hands-on therapy supports the body's natural tendency towards re-balancing & optimum health. Developed from early osteopathic discoveries it has become a unique and refined style of hands on deep listening. Healthy body tissues express a subtle and rhythmic motion we call primary respiration; a biodynamic life force. Response to physical and emotional stress can cause a contraction of the body tissues, which if overwhelmed by trauma, may long term lead to physical dis-ease such as muscular aches and pains, migraine, digestive problems, emotional depression and anxiety. Craniosacral therapists are trained to feel this subtle motion, and in treatment identify stresses and strains in the body and encourage a restoration of balance and relaxation in the tissues. Treatment is done fully clothed. During a session you may feel a deep sense of relaxation as your body sets the pace of the work enabling you to remain comfortable, in control and able to integrate the changes that occur, in a safe, supporting environment. This therapy is suitable for people of all ages.
